A group of residents began the North Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department in 1922 after one of the local saw mills was…More destroyed by fire. The department remains completely comprised by volunteers from the community.
The department's 28 active members include retirees, contractors, engineers, accountants, college students, salesmen and government workers. Members must be 18 years old and need to complete an application that includes a medical and police background check and completion of a physical test and basic fire training school.
The department has recently started a Junior Firemen Program, which is for young men and women, ages 16 to 18. Several members of the inaugural group have since become active members of the department. There are four current Junior Firemen who attend drills, answer fire calls and attend fire training school.
