A group of residents began the North Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department in 1922 after one of the local saw mills wasMore destroyed by fire. The department remains completely comprised by volunteers from the community.

The department's 28 active members include retirees, contractors, engineers, accountants, college students, salesmen and government workers. Members must be 18 years old and need to complete an application that includes a medical and police background check and completion of a physical test and basic fire training school.

The department has recently started a Junior Firemen Program, which is for young men and women, ages 16 to 18. Several members of the inaugural group have since become active members of the department. There are four current Junior Firemen who attend drills, answer fire calls and attend fire training school.

West Essex First Aid Squad

The West Essex First Aid Squad's 85 active volunteer members serve Caldwell, West Caldwell, North Caldwell, EssexMore Fells and Fairfield. The crew has four ambulances and one rescue truck to provide 24-hour emergency medical service and rescue with the Jaws of Life at no cost to the patient. In 2007 and 2008, the squad received more than 2,600 calls each year.

The squad works with Paramedic Mobile-ICU units based out of local hospitals, including Mountainside, St. Barnabas and others. The squad also works with local fire departments to provide medical care to firefighters as well as civilian patients at fire scenes.

Membership is open to anyone over the age of 16 who lives or works in any of the five municipalities. No experience is necessary and all required training is provided by the squad.
