The Caldwell Borough Council introduced a $11,532,789 municipal budget on Tuesday that included 1.4 percent tax hike. This means the average Caldwell home assessed at $421,455 will pay about $42 more in municipal taxes than in 2012. Wharton-based sewer cleaning company paid nearly $150 for overbilling to borough. Caldwell College will celebrate its 71st commencement Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the George R. Newman Center on the campus. The day will mark a milestone for the college as it awards its first-ever doctoral degrees. Eric Rozenblat, of Oakland, and Denise Kerth, Collingswood, will receive Ph.D.s in applied behavior analysis. A graduation Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in the center. The nominations are in for the Students of the Month at Grover Cleveland Middle School. May's award winners at the middle school for academic excellence are sixth-grader Will McCann, seventh-grader Veronica Czyzewski and eighth-grader Devan O'Sullivan. “These students must achieve academic success; exhibit positive behavior; have a positive and friendly attitude; be understanding, honest, and caring; and be a creative thinker,” said middle school Principal James Brown. “These are the requirements to be nominated as Student of the Month.” The middle school awards Student of the Month honors to one student from each grade every month during the school year. West Caldwell fencing champion Veronica Olga Czyzewski is one of only a handful of girls in the United States to earn a C ranking in the sport.
A local 13-year-old girl skilled with the saber won first place in a recent fencing tournament. Veronica Olga Czyzewski, of West Caldwell, parried and battled her way to win the North American Cup in Richmond, Va., on April 14. A seventh-grade student attending Grover Cleveland Middle School, Czyzewski beat out more than 5,000 fencers in the tournament from Canada, Mexico and the United States. "I am extremely proud of this most recent achievement, since I trained extremely hard for it and met my goal of winning," said Czyzewski in an email. Czyzewski has been been training for the past five years under coaches Janusz Mlynek and Aleks Ochocki at the Polish American Fencing School in Linden. Czyzewski is currently ranked 2nd in the …

Registration is now open for the Summer Enrichment Program at Trinity Academy. The program is open to all, but currently enrolled Trinity Academy students will have priority so register early to reserve a space. The cost is $200 per week/per child plus $25 per each weekly trip. Children may register for all or select weeks. For those children currently in pre-K or entering kindergarten in September, camp will be held at the Trinity Academy Early Childhood Center in Roseland. The program will be held Mondays to Fridays from July 8 through Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. The regional high school makes the nationwide list for the first time.
West Essex Regional High School was ranked among the top 1,000 best high schools in the country, according to Newsweek and The Daily Beast. The 2013 America's Best High School rankings placed the regional high school at 944. The high school did not make the list in either 2012 or 2011. James Caldwell High School was not mention in the most recent rankings nor in any of the previous years. The rankings were based on a multitude of factors, including graduation rate, college acceptance rate and standardized test scores, among other things. The publication gave West Essex High School an overall score of 3.04. The top school in the country, Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, received a 4.84. While new inductees are expected to be named later this year, take a look at those names already on the list.
There are 76 men and women in the James Caldwell High School Athletic Hall of Fame and everyone of them can be seen below. The last year anyone was inducted into the local sports hall of fame was 16 years ago in 1996, but that streak will soon end. Earlier in May, the 2014 James Caldwell High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee announced it plans on reviving the tradition next year with a new class of inductees. The committee expects to announce the Class of 2014 in November and hold an induction ceremony in April 2014. The board of education renewed the district’s board administrator's contract and hired a new technology supervisor at its reorganization meeting. Kerry Keane was unanimously reappointed as board administrator on Monday by the board. Keane began in the district in July 2012. The board administrator’s contract must be renewed annually, so her new contract extends through July 2013. “I want to thank Kerry for her first year,” said board president Mary Davidson. “She’s done a great job.” Don Markese was also appointed as the district’s new supervisor of technology. Markese’s one-year contract will begin on July 1 and he will make $110,000. He is currently the director of technology at Freehold Regional High School in Englishtown. Parking …

Whoever wrote this press release has just done the fencer and the fencing world a great disservice. There's at least one error per paragraph. C rated fencers in her age group - certainly more than four - perhaps only in saber, and in New Jersey.
