4 North Caldwell Seniors Shine at Essex County Art Show

'The talent displayed by our senior artists is truly amazing and the artwork is inspiring,' said Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr.

Four North Caldwell residents were among 33 senior citizens recognized for their art work at the Essex County Senior Citizens Juried Art Show. 

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. congratulated the artists during an awards ceremony on Aug. 14 at the Essex County Hospital Center in Cedar Grove. This year, a record 119 entries were submitted for review. 

“I congratulate the winners and all the artists who participated in this year’s Senior Art Show," said DiVincenzo. "The talent displayed by our senior artists is truly amazing and the artwork is inspiring,” DiVincenzo said.

“Essex County has a thriving fine arts community and our Senior Art Show enables our older residents, both professionals and non-professionals, to display their original creations where the public can see them. This is an excellent event for us to promote the arts and inspire our residents to use their talents,” he added.

The four North Caldwell residents to receive awards were:

  • Pat Flaherty won first place in the professional oil category for “Hassan.”
  • Phyliss Huggett won first place in the professional mixed media category for “My Grandmother’s House."
  • Michael Mund won second place in the non-professional photography category for “Leave the Lights On.”
  • Steve Van Zant won first place in the professional photography category for “Touch of Provence.”

State Sen. Teresa Ruiz (D-Essex) said, “I am really enthusiastic about this year’s submissions and the quality of the artwork that was chosen for awards. ... Our greatest asset is all of you sitting here today because you remind us to continue to strive for a greater livelihood."

The other artists and the awards they received are as follows:

Cedar Grove

•   Jane Ballinger won second place in the non-professional watercolor category for “Floating Floral.”

•   Sudha Gupta won first place in the non-professional craft category for “Misses Blouse.”

•   Dan Holtz won second place in the professional photography category for “Roof Lines.”

•   Frank Ingram received an honorable mention in the non-professional photography category for “Brooklyn Bridge.”

•   Lallaine Loesser won second place in the non-professional oil category for “Peckman River.”

•   Roseann Martin received an honorable mention in the non-professional drawing category for “Laura.”

•   Constance Seugling won second place in the professional mixed media category for “In the Beginning” and second place in the professional sculpture category for “Music in the Wind.”

•   Stanley Zimmerman won first place in the non-professional drawing category for “How Many Ovals?”

East Orange

•   Lester Johnson won first place in the professional sculpture category for “Nested Sphere.”

•   Rudy Martin won first place in the professional watercolor category for “Is the Likesick Off?”

Essex Fells

•   Marion Franks won second place in the non-professional drawing category for “Loki.”

Fairfield

•   William Heina won first place in the non-professional sculpture category for “Top Banana.”

Livingston 

• Harriet Hiller won first place in the professional drawing category for “The Haircut.”

• Malini Parekh won first place in the non-professional photography category for “A Delicate Balance.”

• Sheila Writt won second place in the non-professional pastel category for “Flowers in a White Vase." 

Montclair

•   Horet Hoyer won first place in the non-professional digital imagery category for “Voyager at Saturan.”

Newark

•   Maggie Brown won first place in the professional digital imagery category for “Louis Armstrong.”

•   Juan Guerra won second place in the non-professional mixed media category for “Forever.”

•   Florian Jenkins won second place in the professional drawing category for “Isaiah 11:8 – Study for the Holy Mountain.”                                

Nutley

•   Elsie Cerami won first place in the non-professional pastel category for “Silky.”

•   Nina Delcollo won first place in the non-professional print category for “Old Friends.”

Orange

•   Susan Marx won second place in the professional acrylic category for “White Irises.”

Roseland

•   Joseph Mango won first place in the non-professional acrylic category for “Covered Bridge in Autumn.”

•   Joseph Marino won first place in the non-professional oil category for “Sunset.”

South Orange

•   Edward Hoffner won second place in the non-professional acrylic category for “Early Morning NYC.”

•   Victor Esquilin won first place in the non-professional watercolor category for “Birch Tree.”

•   Cindy Wolf won first place in the non-professional mixed media category for “Anima.”

•   Sheila Sugarman won first place in professional pastel category for “Sunlight through the Trees.”

Verona

•   Catherine Luzzi won first place in the professional acrylic category for “Lifeguard.”

West Orange

•   Bert Shapiro won second place in the professional watercolor category for “The Glow.”

Artists who received first place awards are eligible to have their artwork entered into the New Jersey Senior Citizens Art Show. The Essex County Senior Art Show and Exhibit was open to all professional and non-professional artists ages 60 and older. Art work was judged on originality, composition, style, and quality and creativity.

Seniors whose artwork was awarded first place are automatically entered into the NJ Senior Citizens Art Show, which will be on display at Meadow Lakes, 300 Meadow Lakes, East Windsor, from Sept. 23 to Oct. 31. Viewing hours are Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
