West Essex Field Hockey Wins County Tourney

Knights defeat Montclair Mounties to earn seventh county championship.

West Essex defeated Montclair 4-0 to win the Essex County Field Hockey Tournament at Watchung Field in Montclair on Saturday.

Junior forward Kaitlyn Struss scored three goals and sophomore forward Alyssa Menendez recorded one goal and an assist. Junior mid-fielder Steph Pezzuti, senior forward Amanda Cassera and sophomore forward Gabby Girardi all contributed with one assist.

Stellar performances by West Essex junior mid-fielders Sophia Haramis, Jackie Renda and Steph Pezzuti gave West Essex possession of the ball the majority of the game. The defensive trio of juniors Marissa Cafone, Caroline Fiore and Kelly Cousoulis allowed the Mounties only one shot on goal. Freshmen Paige Innarella tended the net for the Knights registering one save.

West Essex (13-1) was the top seeded team and Montclair (13-2) was 2nd seeded in the ECT.

This is the seventh county championship for the Knights, according to NJ.com, which called them a "team to watch."

The Knights are 14-1 for the season. Their only loss was to Oak Knoll on Sept 20.
