Mount Volleyball Off to 5-1 Start

Lions move up to the SEC's American Division this fall, and other MSD sports news.

The Lions are off to a tremendous start in the Super Essex Conference (SEC) for 2012, putting together a 5-1 record through games of Sept. 12.

Head coach Marybeth Olsinski (’05) has received solid performances from Ellie Bruscino (‘14), who has 47 points and 29 digs thus far, Kylie Freer (‘14), who has 38 kills and 20 blocks among a very consistent group of sta-tistics, Natalie Hicklin’s (‘14) 68 digs and 30 service points, 72 digs by Gabby Viera (‘14), Mary-Grace Testa (‘14), who has recorded 62 digs, 38 kills and 29 service points and Sam Meehan’s (‘14) 92 assists, 45 service points and 32 digs.

The Lions have moved up to the SEC’s American Division this fall. The American is considered the toughest division in the league.

Among the team’s wins this season were 2-1 victories over Caldwell and West Orange, as well as a 2-0 win opposite Cedar Grove. The team lost its first game on Sept. 12 in three sets to one of the stronger teams in the conference, Science Park.

Mount St. Dominic was 1-3 through games of Sept. 12. The Lions gained its first victory by blanking Newark Academy on Sept. 10, 2-0. Jillian Harris (‘14) scored a goal and assisted on another, while Fionna Snoddy (‘15), last year’s leading scorer, registered a goal. MSD lost a 5-2 decision in the season opener, with Harris and Maria Bio (‘16) scoring and Claire Peck (’14) adding an assist. MSD lost to Verona, 2-0 and Caldwell, 5-0, in SEC contests. 

Field Hockey Edges Mount St. Mary, 1-0, for First Win

The Lions won their first game of the 2012 campaign with a 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary on Sept. 14. Amanda Salmon (’13) scored the lone goal for MSD in the second half while goaltender Briana Marcantonio (‘13) had 10 saves. It was the second win in the program’s three-year history. 

Maddie Morrissey (‘14) scored the team’s first goal of the season in a loss to Montclair Kimberley on Sept. 8. Meghan Herbert (‘15) had an assist while Marcantonio had eight saves. 

In the season opener, at home, against Millburn on Sept. 6, Marcantonio turned back 24 shots. 

Head coach Liz Gennaro has been encouraged by her team’s energy and effort. Gennaro, an assistant coach last year at MSD, has replaced Deanna Perrotta, who will miss the season on maternity leave. 

Cross Country Opens Season

The Lions opened the season by sweeping a tri meet over West Orange, 17-41 and West Essex, 15-47. Amanda Corbosiero (’14) was the first runner across. Freshmen Juliet Kohli took second overall and junior Jessie Brodsky finished third. Another freshman, Amari Onque-Shabazz finished fourth and sophomore Sarah Workman took fifth. 

Head coach Asim Kohli has been pleased with the team’s performance so far. “Our freshmen (Juliet Kohli and Onque-Shabazz) have contributed on the varsity level, and Brodsky, a first-year runner should be a major contributor for us this season.” 

Sophomores Alana Herran and Caroline Haskins should also help the Lions this season, as the team seeks another SEC and Essex County Tournament title. The freshman class also has some up and coming runners in Egan Barnitt, Rachel Martini, Jaclyn Staranka, and Megan Doyle. Other first-year team members are Brodsky, and sophomores Danielle D’Amore, Alana Frederique, Annie McDon-nell, Kelly McGowan, Briana Merkerson and Chandi Piiru. 

At an invitational on Sept. 15 at Villa Walsh, the Lions took fourth overall as a team. Brodsky was second in the race and Onque-Shabazz finished fourth in a field of 84 runners. 

Coach Kohli reported that the team had one of its best turnouts in the program’s history, with 22 runners on the roster. 

MSD is currently ranked third in the state by NJ Runner magazine and 15th, nationally, for schools under 500 students by the National High School Coaches Association. 

Tennis Wins First Match Against Nutley 

The Lions won its first SEC match of the season on Sept. 10, defeating Nutley, 4-1. Sarah Hall (‘15) won at first singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Antoinette Radici (‘15) prevailed at second singles, 6-3, 6-2. Lauren Turano (‘16) rallied from a 6-1 defeat in the first set to win a tough second set, 6-4. Turano lost a close match, 6-4, to conclude a good performance in the singles competition. 

The second doubles team of Anjali Shah (‘14) and Rachel Spinelli (‘15) won in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
