Chiefs Win Football Opener and Other Sports Highlights

The James Caldwell High School Chiefs 2012 fall sports season is off to an impressive start.

In their first game of the season, the Chiefs varsity football team rebounded after being down 12-7 at the half to defeat Cedar Grove Panthers 40-12 Saturday at Bonnel Field. The Chiefs play the West Essex Knights in North Caldwell next on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m.

The girls soccer team tied Montclair Friday and remains undefeated. The Chiefs beat West Orange 3-0 Monday and Mt. Saint Dominic Academy 5-0 on . The team is 3-0-2.

The boys soccer team lost to Nutley 2-0 on Soccer Saturday, but defeated Verona 4-3 a few days later with a Billy Evers hat trick. On Thursday, a penalty kick from Jimmy Sweeney gave the team a 3-2 win in an . The boys are 3-2. They are on the road to play Newark East Side at 4 p.m. on Sept. 19.

Caldwell volleyball is 4-3 with wins against Science Park (2-1), Verona (2-1), Cedar Grove (2-0) and West Orange (2-0). The Chiefs fell to Bloomfield, Nutley and Mount St. Dominic to start the season.

The Chiefs girls tennis team landed its first win Thursday against Belleville to raise their record to 1-3. They’ll seek a second win at the Mount on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
