Somewhere In Time Continues To Thrive In Caldwell

I am a Caldwell resident and Caldwell has always been known for its shopping. It's got a nice downtown and nice community.

More than a decade ago ago, Debbie Sloan opened Somewhere In Time in Caldwell and continues to serve community today.

Patch recently spoke with Sloan about the industry and how the business community has changed since she opened her store.

In May I will be celebrating my 15-year anniversary. 

Why did you want to start a business here in the Caldwells?

Well, I am a Caldwell resident and Caldwell has always been known for its shopping. It’s got a nice downtown and nice community.

At the time, I quit my corporate job as an accountant in order to start my business.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve experienced as a small business owner

The recession has made the biggest impact. Everything was fine before that: business was fine; everything was moving along and growing each year. 

Then the recession hit. And that definitely put the breaks on everything. 

And also competing against the big-box stores is a challenge. 

I’ve always sold American-made goods. I set myself apart by having a relationship with those small crafters and companies, whose quality items rarely find their way onto the shelves of the big-box stores. 

What are you most proud of as a business owner? 

I would say I’m most proud of my reputation and what my customers say about me.

I’m friendly and provide a warm atmosphere. It’s homey and cozy, and I provide a lot of customer service. It’s also like walking into a nicely decorated home when you come here.
