West Essex High Schoolers Place in Journalism Competition

Senior Victoria Agrifolio of Fairfield, a Wessex Wire editor-in-chief, placed second in the “On Site Writing Contest” at the Garden State Scholastic Press Association’s Fall Conference in October at Rutgers University.

She competed against 20 other high school journalists. Victoria attended a presentation about Hurricane Sandy coverage by a Star-Ledger reporter, then used her notes to compose an article on the presentation. She will receive a plaque for her achievement.

The West Essex Wire also earned prizes in the Summer Newspaper Competition. Regina Walter, class of 2013, earned a first place medal for her reporting on classmate Ali Vizzone’s courageous battle with cancer. She and Samantha Gilbert, class of 2013, won “Honorable Mention” for a head-to-head opinion article they wrote on gun control last year.
