Sandy Adds Two Days to School Calendar

Storm forces Caldwell-West Caldwell school district to revisit vacation schedule.

Caldwell-West Caldwell Schools will add two days to the 2012-2013 calendar thanks to Superstorm Sandy.

The district's board of education will vote next week on the superintendent's recommendation to open schools on Monday, Jan. 21 and Tuesday, Feb. 19.

January 21, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, would be an early dismissal day. February 19, the day after President's Day, was originally scheduled as a vacation day as part of a shortened winter break.

The district had built-in four snow days for the school year. But an unprecedented Oct. 29 storm left the school's withpower power, and closed, for six days.

The storm also canceled the annual teachers' convention in Atlantic City, and the district chose to open on two days in November that normally would have been vacation days for the convention.

Caldwell-West Caldwell Schools Superintendent James Heinegg said Monday if no snow days were needed by mid-April, schools would close on the Friday before Memorial Day.

The board of education meets next on Monday, Dec. 9.

Let's hope we don't use the 2 snow days we would have left after they vote in the Jan and Feb. days as school days. However, I see that if we don't use the remaining snow days, school will be closed the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. Does anyone know what happens if we don't use the last snow day? Do the kids get an additional day off somewhere down the road?
