JCHS Student Wins Essex County Lawyers' Essay Contest

Caldwell youth's award-winning essay explored why students with disabilities are not included in everyday activities.

A James Caldwell High School incoming sophomore was one of a number of county students honored June 17 by the Essex County Bar Association. 

Varun Ravichandran won the association’s Rights of People with Disabilities Award, which included a certificate and $200, for placing first in the group's annual essay contest in the grade nine through 12 division.

“The main things I wrote about," Ravirchandran said, "centered on the challenges that [special-needs] children face in everyday life from their peers and what the peers and the community as a whole can do to help them."

The young man's winning essay explored why students with disabilities oftren are not included in extracurricular events such as birthday parties.
