Five Things You Need to Know This Week

From foreign travel to craft fairs, here is what you need to know this week.

  • Need a new 'do for the Thanksgiving holiday? Stop by , get that new look, and support the JCHS Scholarship Fund! The Fund is sponsoring the 16th Annual Cut-A-Thon at Hair Design's by Flora on Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 3 to 7 p.m. All haircuts are just $20 and all proceeds benefit the JCHS Scholarship Fund. No appointment necessary.
  • A new season is approaching, and with it comes new sports! Basketball and wrestling season begin in just a few weeks, and the deadline to register for the programs is this Friday, Nov. 18. Basketball is offered for students in grades two through eight, and wrestling for students in grades two through eight. Open to all West Caldwell and Caldwell residents, the program cost ranges from $45 to $55, depending on the grade of the participant.   • Looking for a way to spruce up your holiday greetings? Consider stopping by the for a lesson in Calligraphy: Beautiful Handwriting. On Friday, Nov. 18, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., the Center, located on the campus of , will offer a course in basic calligraphy. Attendees will learn the cursive lettering style, the Chancery Italic.   • The , a social membership organization for mothers, will hold its Fourth Annual Gift and Vendor Show. On Saturday, Nov. 19, from noon to 3 p.m., at the Caldwell United Methodist Church, the show will offer a wide range of products for purchase, including cosmetics, bags, purses, jewelry, wine bags, coasters, cards, scrapbooking materials, house ware items and more.   • If you dream of traveling to Italy, but just aren’t sure when you might get there, take a short trip to the  and . This Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. to noon, Homer J. Costalos will provide a virtual tour of Italy at the Caldwell Public Library through lecture and photographs. Presented by the  at Caldwell College, the cost to attend is just $6 per traveler. On Friday, Nov. 18, Dr. Bob Butts will explore Bel Canto Opera, an Italian operatic style of the early 19th century. Part of the Lifelong Learning Institute’s Special Lecture Series, many of the operas continue to thrill audiences around the world with their musical beauty and dramatic passion. Four composers defined this romantic style—Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and Verdi. Held at the College’s , there is a pre-lecture social from 9:15 to 9:50 a.m., followed by the lecture from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $10 at the door.
