Caldwell-West Caldwell Recognizes Student Achievements

Students earn recognition in Chess Team, Math League, Chemistry Olympics, Poetry Recitation Contest and Spring Athletics.

The following achievements by students in Caldwell-West Caldwell Schools were announced at the Monday, June 11 CWC Board of Education meeting by Board President Maureen McNish:

—Chess Tournament

Caldwell-West Caldwell hosted the Team Chess Tournament sponsored by the Essex County Steering Committee for Gifted Education.

On the Varsity level, Ashvin Nagarajan and Alex Rosa took first place honors.

On the Junior Varsity level, Brendan Padover and Griffin Silverthorne took second place honors.

Congratulations to these middle school students and their teacher Claudia Douris.

—Math League

Our eighth grade and high school students participated in the Essex County Math League competition. Our team placed fourth overall out of the 14 districts that participated.

In addition, our Geometry Team placed second. Team members include Joe Salter, Sean Clarkin, Nicole Palazzo, Taryn Urban, and Kaustav Mukherjee.

Nicole and Taryn also placed third in Geometry as individuals.

Lisa DeLaura is the Math Team advisor.

—Chemistry Olympics

On May 17, Bob Dubas and Marcia Renzetti took two teams of students to NJIT in Newark for the 2012 Chemistry Olympics. Both teams were very successful earning plaques in many events.

Event 5 – Demonstration Show of Exothermic or Endothermic Reaction

1st place for Emily Esposito and Lauren Durocher

Event 10 – Microscale Lab to determine the Percentage of Carbon in a Carbonate

1st place for Emily Esposito, Lauren Durocher, and Joe Chen

Event 8 – Analytical Chemistry Lab to Determination of Water Hardness

2nd place for Ramzi Kurzum and Tim DeVincenzo

Team A earned enough overall points for a Third Place team finish.

Team A members were:

Praveen Nagarajan, Corinne Cannavale, Phil Wright, Erika Axe, Emily Esposito, Lauren Durocher, Ramzi Kurzum, Tim DeVincenzo, Chris Lim, Sean Buckley, Ryan Acocella, and Joe Chen.

Team B members were:

Matt Gordon, Samantha Weckenman, Nikita Page, Ethan Meth, Katie Aliotta, Tom Mathews, Peter Schultz, Billy Bartlett, Iris Cai, Marie Lys Mollet, Sam Kim, and James D’Agostino.

—Poetry Recitation

At the William Paterson University Annual World Language Poetry Recitation Contest, freshman student Michael Migliore came home with a third place finish among the 16 students in his category.

—Spring Athletics

Golf, Softball, Baseball, Boys Track and Girls Lacrosse won their respective divisions during the spring interscholastic athletic season.

During the Group II Section II Championship Meet, our 4x400 Relay Team set the school record. The team consisted of Jared Fleischer, Brandon Dolce, Fahd Seddiki, and Matt Michalik.
