Fines Double in NJ for Left-Lane Lingerers

Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill Wednesday doubling fines for motorists that drive in the left lane for miles instead of using it to pass other vehicles.

For left-lane hogs in New Jersey, the message is clear: Move over!

Gov. Chris Christie signed into law on Wednesday a bill that doubles the fines for drivers who ride the left lane for miles and miles.

For those motorists who linger in left lanes instead of using them to pass other vehicles, fines will increase from $50-$200 to $100-$300.

In addition, the bill calls for $50 from each ticket to go toward signs telling drivers to keep right while driving.

The new format of the Patch, makes it very difficult to read. It's a good thing there are others, like TPA and JTP Your format tries to cram too much stuff on the first page...and once a post leaves the front page, it's forgotten

Public safety has nothing to do with this law. The goal here is to increase revenue to operate the grossly glutenous government. I was ticketed on the njtpk recently. I pulled off one of the exits to get gas. As I pulled off, I saw that the gas lines were each 5 cars long, so I diverted back onto the turnpike planning to get gas at the airport location. before I got back on to the turnpike i was pulled over. the cop gave me a ticket for not stopping and getting out of my car before I went back on the turnpike. it was a 60 dollar ticket, so it was of course cheaper to pay it than to take a day off and fight it. I bought a car camera a few days after that. now I have video to fall back on when these gestapo start extorting me.

Sounds great, that they will increase the fine, and that traffic should move better!! BUT, who is going to enforce ?? really!! Always hearing about these laws regarding cell phone use, all sounds great, but I can count them all on the road, as they drive between lanes, slow up and then speed up - where are the cops? - and agree with bbbnto, do not like new Patch format for that and many reasons.

Janice, last thing we need is more laws to give the government more excuse to tax us. Really, be honest, how often is it that someone drives slow in the fast lane, yes it happens, but do we really need double fines? Why are you NJians so keen on taxing and fining the other guy? I have never seen such a blob of socialist in one spot. Well NJ, keep up the good work, you will soon reach your goals of complete socialism. If you can't wait and need to live in it right now, just move to Detriot, you can get a nice house there for 10,000 or you can defect to Cuba. Everything is free there. More laws, oh yes, can we get the law books just a few inches thicker by the end of the year? That will make everything so much better. Red tape and laws and more regulations. that is the ticket janice. yes. you so smart.

Janice i have run into this behavior before with people driving slower in the left lane. I don't like it. I handle it myself, because I am one of those evil libertarians. I will flash my high beams at them and wait, then I will tap my horn. If they don't move over then I will pass in the right lane. I never thought a new law should be passed for that. It is rediculous.

I agree with the double fine. I often wondered if the left lane driver is ignorant or just stubborn? Whichever they are, it's annoying and dangerous. It ties up traffic and makes it dangerous for others switching lanes and trying to just get where they need to go.....Also drivers who do not use their signals to switch lanes is dangerous, afterall, we are not mindreaders.........Common Courtesy is the name of the game.......Thank you.......
