Deer Culling Program Returning To West Caldwell

The goals of the program will be to control the deer population, increase safety and provide food for those individuals in need.

West Caldwell deer management program will return this year. 

The shotgun deer management program is anticipated to take place on three properties: two in the Hatfield Swamp area and one at the township's leaf composting facility. 

Everyone participating in the program is certified in the Essex County Deer Management Program and has significant prior experience with deer management.

The goals of the program will be to control the deer population and increase safety. In addition, meat harvested from the culled deer will be made available to area food pantries and soup kitchens. 

The program will begin at the end of November and extend through February 2014.

Deer culling will take place on the following days: 

  • Nov. 25, 26, 27
  • Dec. 9, 11-13, 18-20
  • Jan. 2, 3, 6-10, 13-17, 20-24, 27-31
  • Feb. 3-7  

The township will also be posting signs around the included municipal properties, announcing the program on its digital display sign and utilizing a robotic telephone call system those residents in the proximity.
