Borough to Buy New Police, Fire and DPW Equipment

North Caldwell Council approves capital expenditures, bonds funding for various projects.

A new police vehicle, computer and software upgrades for town hall and picnic tables for the recreation department are among the items the North Caldwell Council approved purchasing at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The council unanimously approved a total of $94,656 in capital expenditures.

In addition, the council authorized 6-0 to bond funding for various improvements around the borough, including replacing the roof of the police department, pump station work and replacing playground equipment. The $782,500 bond appropriation will also allow the borough to move forward with a number of road projects.

  • North Caldwell officials will dedicate a plaque in honor of John P. Salamone, who was killed in the terrorist attacks on New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. The dedication will take place on Monday, May 28, at 8 a.m., at .
  • Legal and Ordinance Committee Chair Councilwoman Cynthia Santamauro introduced an ordinance authorizing the codification of the Borough’s Code. A public hearing on the ordinance will be held on Tuesday June 26.
  • The council approved adding two additional revenue items to the already approved . According to Councilman Frank Astorino, chair of the Finance Committee, the borough has received a grant from the N.J. Dept. of Transportation for $205,300 for improvements to Gould Avenue, as well as $10,512.32 from Clean Communities. 
  • Council President and Public Safety Committee Chair Jim Campbell said the received 954 calls in April compared to 657 for the same period in 2011. Campbell noted that burglar alarm calls were up 50 percent for the month of April, but no burglaries were reported. 
  • North Caldwell Police Chief Mark Deuer reported that three members of his department helped save a toddler who nearly drowned in his backyard pool on May 16. .
