Senior citizens throughout Essex County may qualify for a free voucher for a special farmer's market planned for Saturday.
The Essex County Senior Citizens Farmer's Market is sponsored by county officials, according to Colleen Brittain of the Belleville Health Department.
"It is important to get as much fresh produce as possible for older residents," Brittain said.
The exact site of the market is the Steve Audubato, Sr. Sports Complex Cafe at Branch Brook Park, at the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Lake Street, just across the Belleville border in Newark, according to county officials.
Seniors may qualify for a $20 voucher if they are 60 or older, have proper identification, proof of residency and meet certain income guidelines, according to officials.
Transportation may be available to the market by calling 973-395-5858, depending on demand, officials said. For information, seniors can call 973-395-8378 and ask for Haniyyah Muhammad or email to email@example.com, officials said.
The purpose of the state’s Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program is to provide locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs for the nutritional health of New Jersey’s senior citizens, and to expand the awareness and use of the local farmers’ markets, according to state Department of Health officials.
Each eligible senior receives a total of $20 for the season to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs from authorized farmers. The checks are issued one time for the entire season, now through to Sept. 30, state officials said.
Farmers interested in becoming authorized farmer vendors in the program should contact the state at 609-292-9560.
