After the Conventions: Who Will Win the 2012 Presidential Election, Obama or Romney?

Now that the Democratic and Republican delegates have officially chosen their nominees, Patch wants to know: Who are you betting on?

It's official: With President Barack Obama's acceptance speech in Charlotte Thursday night, both the Republicans and Democrats have formally chosen their nominees for the 2012 presidential election. Let the real race begin.

A lot can change between now and Nov. 6: Gaffes, scandals or even major international news events could shift the dynamics of the campaign.

The latest Gallup Polls show registered voters preferring Obama to Mitt Romney by just one percentage point, 47 percent to 46 percent. A USA Today/Gallup poll taken just before the party conventions found American voters think Obama is more likeable, but trust Romney more to handle the economy.

Pundits have been busy for months handicapping the major-party candidates on various factors: incumbent advantage, fundraising clout, even religion.

Patch wants to know: Regardless of who you support for President, who do you think will actually claim victory in November?

Vote in our poll below, and let us know your reasoning in the comments section.

Obama will win, but it may not be decisive enough to stay out of the courts.
cassansra Ivery September 09, 2012 at 02:29 PM
It would not be this much controversy if Obama was white!! HIs only problem is the color of his skin.and white people do not want a black president.
Robert Rubio September 09, 2012 at 03:08 PM
Romney is Better for the economy. Obama has done nothing in 4 years except blame the previous administration and take credit on the auto industry recovry established by the Bush administration!
Peter Skreedorf September 09, 2012 at 06:44 PM
You can't just paint all white people with the same brush. By what you say Bill Clinton does not want Obama to be elected, have some intelligence here
RC September 09, 2012 at 07:32 PM
Obama should win. Dealing with an economy is not an experiment nor a competition to prove who can serve the best, without being realistic about the situation the country is in. America cannot handle this kind of irrational shake up as part of Romney's desperate yet fake attempt to help the economy!
Jim September 09, 2012 at 07:54 PM
It is going to be a very close election. If people really understood the issues than I would say Obama would win. Most people, however do not read or delve into the reality of the GOPs position. Others are very disapointed with Obama and wish he would have governed more Progressively and communicated better. He had very good support from those around him and delivered a so-so address at the convention. Romney is an absolute joke, but based on the horrible joblessness I would say that Romney might actually pull it out yet.

Obama is a lazy person. He stated THIS himself. He is a snake-oll salesman. No experience in business PERIOD. That is why gas is $4.50 for FOUR YEARS!!!!!!, and unemploment has not been under 8% for FOUR YEARS. Most people voteing for Obama are embaressed for HIM and feel sorry for HIM !!!!!!!!. THAT IS A FACT.
gary meck September 09, 2012 at 09:24 PM
Mitt is a wonder person. He is a GREAT businessman!!!!!!!! Obama is a poor LEADER and a terrible businessman. He has spent $5,000,000,000,000.00 and gas is $4.00 a gallon and unemployment is still over 8%. Most people very sorry for him. He is like a insane person running a MENTAL HOSPITAL or an ALCOHOLIC BARTENDER or a BANK ROBBER manageing a BANK.
Candy Camaletti September 09, 2012 at 09:25 PM
Read the history of America's attempts to overhaul healthcare - almost a century. Obama did it his first year. (It represents healthcare for the powerless and disenfranchised, so doesn't count. 24 straight months of job growth after historic economic decline. (that we're not in a depression is a terrific accomplishment - all indicators would have us there now.) Alternative energy production: all time high. Reliance on foreign oil: 30 year low. All this done despite 'collaborate' with a group hell bent on making him a 1-termer. We're not better off now. (wha?!) Hell yes we're better off!!! Everyone was going belly up (or threatened) 4 years ago this month. This common held notion that Americans have short term memory.... yea, well, kinda hard to dispute when the information from 4 years ago is readily available to you out there on the net. Go back and review some of the hysterical press from that time - maybe that will trigger a few memories. Bush established the auto industry recovery? That and all the rest: classic Republican tactic: "There's nothing so absurd that if you repeat it often enough, people will believe it." -- William James

Media is bias. Mitt Romney is the winner. Media is reporting the opposite because they r hoping u will be convinced to not vote! No one in their right mind would want the same old same old for the next 4 years. Unless, you r on the dole!

People lets clear our heads, think really hard we need to have the right person as PRESIDENT , and the right people in congress. We know who we have , I am afraid it is much better than what we could end up with .

I am sorry to note Cassansra, but even stating such a bigoted statement in this day and age is not only a racist statement, but a false one. In may polls over the last couple months Caucasians have shown an average 50/50 split, while it has been noted in numerous papers that 94% of Minorities polled said they would vote for Obama, many not giving a reason. People have many reasons for voting, but the polls show many other indicators other than color being the issue, such as economy, lack of fulfillment of promises, etc.
Robert Thiemann September 10, 2012 at 01:01 AM
I don't believe that people don't "really understood the issues". When someone applies for CEO of a company, he has to have a proven track record and lots of experience behind him if it is a Forturne500 or higher company. America in the last election surprisingly went with someone with little to no background or track record based on what? Change and Hope speech was the winner. Then did not complete the promised job he was previously elected too, which really showed me his level of responsibility. I am not a Mitt fan by a long shot, but he has a vast track record of accomplishments behind him that could help turn this country around. He has said stupid things, as has Obama, who has done so on many occasions. Yet, Obama has nothing to show for accomplishments other than his "Nobel" prize he really didn't work for or deserve. If you want to get the jobs turned around, put someone in who has run a successful business and shows it.
Paul September 10, 2012 at 01:12 AM
It is not because he is black but because he is a socialist and has done such a poor job.
Alex Schafer September 10, 2012 at 01:23 AM
ONE WORD PEOPLE RON PAUL , EVERYONE WANTS HIM IN ...THE COUNTRY WOULD BA A HAPPIER MORE PROSPEROUS PLACE AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT I AND MOST OF THE PEOPLE I KNOW WILL AND WOULD ONLY VOTE ONE WAY THE RIGHT WAY PEOPLE RON PAUL AND IF WE CANT WE WONT WHY WOULD WE WANT A CONTEST BETWEEN A GIANT DOUCHBAG AND A TURD SANDWITCH?
Amanda James September 10, 2012 at 07:28 AM
Romney could completely turn our country around!!! He is a business man which Obama knows nothing about. You can't expect Obama to know anything about this because he had no experience. He was elected based on his hope and change speech which ended up being lies! He is destroying our country beyond belief and has led is to the highest unemployment rate ever. We also have the worst deficit in history. What a rotten record this president has brought upon him, analysts are saying Obama was the worst president the US has ever had based on the ruin he has done to us! He said that if he didn't have it done in four years then he didn't deserve to be re-elected... With the worst record of any president and the fact that he has crippled our country, done nothing for the economy, has us at the highest we have ever paid for gas, and the worst unemployment ever!!! Analysts are predicting gas prices over $6.00 a gallon and possibly hit $7.00 if Obama continues...he is just nit a business man. The three top analysts have all predicted between $1.60 - $2.30 per gallon within the first 18 months of Romney helping our country. What will obamas excuse and record be after four more years of this. VOTE FOR ROMNEY AND LET'S ACTUALLY GET OUR COUNTRY SOME HELP AND THE RELIEF WE NEED!
adam cummings September 10, 2012 at 07:59 AM
Were in so much debt as a country but most people my age dont really care their focused on living their lives and going to college. Im 18 years old and dont understand much about politics but am curious about the future of this country if things dont change all im saying is we need some change around dont we?
Annette Brooks September 10, 2012 at 02:33 PM
This is time for people to stop being ignorant and believing everythint that Romney says. What about all the people that he put out of work and they lost their pensions. You think you have it hard now, just wait, peole that are on medicare and medicaid now and in the future will have it 3 times harder under the voucher plan he is proposing. You are blaiming President Obama, but he inherited this mess from your previous Republican President George Bush and you expect everything to be corrected in four years when he's getting no help from the other party at all. Let's grow up people if you're not a wealthy, then you are in trouble with Mitt Romney as a president. Things ae going to get worse for all of us that are not in his class.
Frank Stain September 10, 2012 at 03:19 PM
Romney should not even be running for president. He is a businessman. We need businessmen creating jobs in the private sector! That's what Mitt Romney does. Because he's a businessman (well, except for when he was at Bain, when he made easy millions by aggressive LBOs that left the company to carry the debt and often resulted in mass layoffs and usually bankruptcy later on). Anyway, that's why he's called a 'businessman'. He is not called a 'politician'. A business is not a politician. The United States of American is not one large business enterprise, USAllc. Also, a business is not a democracy. These are important differences.
Postman Sharp September 17, 2012 at 12:44 AM
Romney is coming unglued and we're seeing inside him. Americans don't like what they see. He's not a leader. He's not that smart. He's a little man bent on becoming president and that just isn't good enough. Americans wanted Obama. They got him. He's not perfect. But he's not Romney. We'll have him again because Obama has BECOME a GREAT President. Romney does not have that ability and his ego stands in the way of changing. Sorry, Mitt, you don't get my vote.
Wagner Wolf September 20, 2012 at 03:44 PM
For those supporting Romney - PLEASE tell me what his plans are for the country...I'll wait...Also, tell me what his 'business experience' of firing people has to do with running the most developed country in the world. The ONLY reason the economy hasnt made a full recovery under President Obama is because of the Republican obstructionism that we've seen everyday with every issue. They have intentionally made things worse in this country hoping that voters will forget and blame Obama for things that aren't his fault :-( Please WakeUp! Romney has no plan, he wasnt a good governor when he tried, people around the world don't like him, and he seems bent on starting more wars. And by the way - the President of the United States doesnt set the price of gas around the world. Nor does he do private sector hiring. Let's blame the appropriate people for these problems...
FendiOnThePorch September 20, 2012 at 05:20 PM
Thank God for the so-called-Republican Obstructionism...many people are happy that there are those in Congress that vote against inane policies that will drive us further in to our economic nightmare ...that's why they are elected..otherwise, we could just make Obama our King and he could implement whatever crazy entitlement programs and tax increase laws that he wants to...Obama doesn't have anything to do with private sector jobs? The last thing I want to do is make this in anyway personal, but do you understand how government policy affects the economy? I would be writing all day to fully explain but there are many sources from which to choose to enlighten yourself...here's one explaining what Mitt Romney plans to do, since you asked and are waiting: http://www.mittromney.com/blogs/mitts-view/2012/08/mitt-romneys-plan-stronger-middle-class01....Romney is bent on starting more wars? Where is THAT coming from? And, frankly, who cares if people around the world like him! The notion that people around the world 'like' Obama has proven to be useless if true. Strive to be an informed voter! Just because the pundits at MSnbc and the NYT think Romney is a bad guy and want you to think that, too...just does not make it true.
Wagner Wolf September 20, 2012 at 05:45 PM
Clearly, I disagree. Republicans have been against ANYTHING the president has put forward (remember their statement that their number one job was to make him a one-term president, no matter how that affected the american people). So there's something wrong with a jobs plan? support for veterans? healthcare and curtailing healthcare costs? You thought it was a good idea to have the country's credit rating downgraded? Is that what they were elected to do?? President Obama has never once raised taxes (actually cut them in a number of ways) - he wants to go back to more reasonable tax rates, like they were under previous presidents...Have you heard Romney talking about how he would handle Israel/Palestine, Iran, and other foreign affairs? Asking for trouble if he continues with that kind of rhetoric! And Willard's 5-point plan has NO specifics. None. I could scream all day that I would create 12 million jobs on my first day in office, but shouldnt I back that up with details, specifics, and a feasible plan?? I have yet to hear anything of that sort...
Wagner Wolf September 20, 2012 at 05:46 PM
Just my thoughts on the situation...
uncle albert September 21, 2012 at 07:12 PM
Obama for 4 more years ??????? .....NO WAY ! We need him for 4 more decades !!!!!!!
Estele September 21, 2012 at 11:32 PM
Yesterday, the Republicans VOTED AGAINST a bill to help returning veterans to find civilan jobs. The bill was sponsored and put to the floor for a vote by the Democrats. The bill did not pass because of the Republicans voting against the veterans. When President Obama (who I did not vote for) was first sworn in, one of the first things he did was to increase the Veterans Administration budget, because he knew all of the retuirning Vets needed our help. The Republicans voted against this also !! As a registered Republican I will be voting for Obama and the full Democratic ticket this November !!!!
