Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transportation Safety Board has its way.

On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent.

What do you think? Is this a reasonable proposal?

According to a 2011 Mothers Against Drunk Driving report, the latest available data shows New Jersey ranked 31st out of 51 states (including the District of Columbia) in drunken driving injuries and deaths. That year, there were 193 DUI fatalities, MADD said.

About 10,000 deaths nationwide a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year.

Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink.

Just another law on the books. A number is a number, but that doesn't mean I am drunk... or can't safely drive a car. .05% can equal to about just 2 beers, depending on your size. I have a breathalyzer (got it from a alcohol/drug testing company a friend worked for). I have had females who look/act quite drunk and blow less than .08%. And on the other hand, some guys have looked/acted totally sober and blow well over .08%. All it is is a #. Doesn't actually mean anything or tell you if you are actually impaired or not. But the law just needs an actual scientific value to say if someone is drunk or now. Again.. all it is is a number.

Phil Brooks states: "What if that life saved is either yours or one of your family's or friends?" I've given this a lot of thought and I'd feel the same way...

If you people complain so much about living in America, where we have more freedom than any other country in the world, please move out!! You will not be missed.
