Police Save Boy From Drowning

15-month-old revived after falling into family's pool in North Caldwell.

helped save the life of a toddler who fell into his backyard pool and nearly drowned last week.

Chief Mark Deuer said the 15-month-old boy was not breathing when the family called for help at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16. He said police responded in about a minute and quickly took over for the father who had initiated CPR on the child.

North Caldwell Sgt. Tom Mautone and Officer Michael Credico continued to attempt to resuscitate the child for several minutes until the arrived.

"The baby was in and out of consciousness," Deuer said.

The child was transported to the hospital and has since been released.

He is not displaying any deficiencies, according to Chief Deuer, who did not release the family’s name due to the sensitive nature of the incident.

“A terrible situation definitely turned out positive,” Deuer told the borough's governing body at Tuesday night’s council meeting. Deuer read an email at the meeting written by the boy’s father to Sgt. Mautone.

The letter states in part, “I am forever grateful to you and your colleagues. Please pass on my thank you to them. You guys are truly heroes.”

In addition to Mautone and Credico, Sgt. John Belotta also responded to the call.

Deuer said the family had opened the pool just the day before and an alarm that senses disturbances in the water and not been activated.
