Police: Man Crashed Into Pole, Charged With DWI

West Caldwell man said he was trying to avoid a deer on Annin Road.

The following information was provided by the West Caldwell Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A man who crashed his Cadillac into a utility pole Monday night was charged with driving while intoxicated, according to West Caldwell Police.

Harold Cinnamon, 49, of West Caldwell, told police he was attempting to avoid a deer in the roadway when he lost control of his 2003 Cadillac and hit a pole on Annin Road at about 9 p.m. on Monday.

Cinnamon was not injured in the crash, police said. He was given field sobriety tests on the scene.

The road was closed for several hours while PSE&G responded and repaired the broken utility pole.

Harold was attempting to avoid the deer, hasn't he learned that you can't avoid them they are all over the place.

I live on a street close by to Annin and heard this happen, then I heard numerous attempts of him trying to rev his engine and leave the scene. Hopefully they charged him with that too!

If he had managed to get going it would have been pretty easy to follow the skid mark of that right front tire to wherever he ended up.

Maybe he would have avoided the deer if he was sober! If he was innocent why would he be trying to leave the serene? Guilty as charged! Don't drink and drive. That could have been someone child like what happened on Smull Ave, great police work. Bravo!
