Newark Man Faces 20 Years in Prison for Verona Subway Armed Robbery

A 27-year-old Newark man pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to committing armed robberies in Verona and West Orange, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman announced.

Antwon Yarbrough admitted he worked with accomplices to rob a Subway restaurant in Verona in May and a Krauszers convenience store in West Orange the previous month. 

The robberies were part of a nearly yearlong spree undertaken by another city man, Bobby Dawson, 30. Dawson admitted his guilt in a hearing last month.

In the Subway robbery on May 20,  Yarbrough, Dawson and another man entered the restaurant wearing dark hoodies, face masks, and gloves. Both robbers accompanying Yarbrough brandished firearms. 

After entering the restaurant, the robbers restrained an employeeby tying the employee’s hands and feet with zip ties. The robbers then emptied the cash register of several hundred dollars and fled.

In the Krauszers robbery on April 24, Yarbrough and his accomplices entered the store wearing dark hoodies, face masks, and gloves, then secured the door from the inside using a zip tie, while Dawson pointed a firearm at an employee. 

Dawson restrained the employee with zip ties then struck the employee in the head with the gun. Yarbrough restrained the hands and feet of two other victims, one of whom Yarbrough struck in the head with his forearm.

Yarbrough faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 when he is sentenced in March 2014.
