The Fairfield Police Department announced on Monday the retirement of Chief Charles Voelker after 30 years of service.

Voelker will begin a period of terminal leave on Tuesday with his retirement effective June 30.

Voelker said in a statement it has been an "honor and privilege" to serve the Fairfield community for more than three decades and serve as chief for the past six-and-a-half years.

"The officers of the Fairfield Police Department are a group of extremely dedicated professionals, who serve this community to the best of their ability 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, but it is the partnerships that we have formed in this municipality that makes it all work as efficiently and effectively as possible," Voelker said.

"Support from our residents, school and government officials, business community, civic groups, fire department, EMS service providers, such as the West Essex First Aid Squad and the police agencies from the surrounding communities, who are our mutual aid partners, all make the level of public safety in our community possible. We are not the most highly populated community in the West Essex area, but our daytime population far exceeds nearly all of them, thus contributing to the high volume of calls for service we receive each day."

An acting police chief has not yet been announced. Voelker said he hopes the community stakeholders continue to support the police department to ensure the "highest level of public safety possible."

"Knowing so many of you in this community where I was born and raised, is the most difficult part of saying good-bye to everyone," Voelker said. "I look forward to seeing all of you at some time in the not too distant future when I can express my gratitude personally."
