Cars Left With Keys Inside Stolen in the Caldwells

Police say two SUVS were taken from one North Caldwell driveway, a Mercedes-Benz that was left running was stolen in West Caldwell.

Two SUVS and a sedan—all with keys left inside—were reported stolen Friday morning in the Caldwells, according to police.

A homeowner in North Caldwell said a black Mercedes-Benz and a black Lexus, both SUVS, were reported missing from a driveway at 7:20 a.m. The trucks were left open with the keys inside, according to Chief Mark Deuer.

Deuer said the cars are believed to have been stolen sometime between 11:15 p.m. Thursday and early Friday morning.

On the south end of West Caldwell near the Roseland border, a Whitaker Place resident reported her four-door Mercedes-Benz was stolen from her driveway at about 6:53 a.m. Friday.

The woman told police she had started the car to warm it up and went back in the house. When she returned outside, she said it was gone.

West Caldwell Police Chief Michael Bramhall said there were no witnesses to the incident.

“We always encourage people not to leave their vehicles unattended while running for safety issues as well as for issues such as this,” Bramhall said.

The North Caldwell Chief reminded residents to lock their cars and not leave valet keys or purses inside them.

Why in the world would anyone leave keys in their vehicles? Do they also leave their homes unlocked? In this day and age, unfortunately, we can't live like we did years back. Neighbors watch but people aren't home like they use to be. I for one support our local police when stopping people in the area that don't appear to belong. This is only one way to help protect yours and neighbors properties. The other way is to lock up and play it safe.

Oh My god I am shocked. Stolen with the keys in it? This is horrible. UM? more like you deserve what you get. Hey if you can get a Mercedez you should be able to get the electric start to warm it also. Anyone that leaves keys in a car overnight? should ..... need I say more.

Stupid is what stupid does! Bravo! Now the thieves probably have your house keys as well!! Congratulations, how does it feel? Are they in any way related to the other bunch of dummies that left their handbags and keys in their cars at the pool this summer and then cried foul!!! What happened to the remote starters in these cars, I guess they didn't know how to use them. Maybe they couldn't make the payments and it was a set up! Very convenient if you think about it. What are the odds? I'm sure their insurance companies are going to be thrilled.

Does the insurance company pay the same amount on the claim when the owner/driver of the vehicle was a passive contributor to the theft?

Do you think that it is OK to go onto someone's property and take something that does not belong to you? Regardless of whether the keys were left in the car or not,the vicitms did not "deserve" to have their property stolen. Ever hear of morals? Get a clue on how to live your life morally and decently and maybe someday you will actually be able to afford a Mercedes. Note the correct spelling.

The answer to that John is YES!!!!
Kean09 January 04, 2013 at 10:25 PM
WCaldwelldweller I agree we should be able to do what we want on our property. We are all guilty of "warming" up our car. Most of us were raised in this area and it is how we lived.. This is why I say we go back to the old west days stop anyone who does not look like they belong " your not from around this parts are you " I for one work to hard to live in this area, and I am not happy "outsiders" are coming in and taking what we work for..

WOW! What does someone "who does not look like they belong" look like? I was not born and raised here, do I belong?
Common Sense January 05, 2013 at 07:27 PM
Cause WC never had a born-n-raised car thief.... http://caldwells.patch.com/articles/west-caldwell-man-charged-in-car-theft

Kean09 - Don't judge a "Book" by its "Cover". Three Words: Sandy Hook Elementary. The nutcase "looked" like he "belonged" right? and, look what he did. Get over yourself - WCaldwell is nice - but there are other parts of NJ that are gorgeous.
Rebecca McK January 05, 2013 at 08:38 PM
side note to Kean09 - it really doesn't matter if you live in WCaldwell or Orange - as long as you work hard and take pride in your home/community. Noone wants burgulars invading their /home / neighborhoods - don't act as though WCaldwellers are the only ones!!
Kean09 January 05, 2013 at 09:00 PM
I think we all know the answer to that.. If you were born and raised here I am sure you see the same people over and over you may not know them but you have seen them before..
Kean09 January 05, 2013 at 11:14 PM
Hey Rebecca.. If the killer at Sandy hook buzzed to be let in I bet he would have been refused. He shot his way in.. No one is prentending WC is better then any town. And the rest of those "Georgous" town folks feel the same way.. Ibet thos car thieves are from out of town. Oh and get back to us when your house is robbed or your car is stolen.. All I am saying is its time for everyone to pay attention to whats going on around us..
John Lee January 06, 2013 at 12:24 AM
again, I wasn't born nor was I raised here, so I guess you'll be calling the po-po if you see me in the area since you probably have not seen me before
Kean09 January 06, 2013 at 01:06 AM
Nope I am not going to call the "PO PO"

All I can say is that I've owned a few Mercedes and I know for a fact that you can't get a remote start because of the hi-tech alarm, because I wanted to get one a few years ago and was told the same thing. Simple rule of living " there is no right way to do something that is wrong" if it's not yours it shouldn't be touched by someone else. Hopefully the residents will learn a valuable lesson. The criminals don't learn and will continue to steal what's not theirs.
