Candle Sparks Fairfield House Fire, Police Say

Resident escapes blaze on Fairfield Road Sunday afternoon.

A Fairfield resident escaped a house fire likely sparked by a lit candle Sunday afternoon, police said.

A passing motorist reported a heavy smoke condition in the area of Kulick and Fairfield roads shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday. Officers were able to alert the lone resident and got her out of the home on Fairfield Road.

The Fairfield Fire Department was assisted by the West Caldwell and Pine Brook departments. The West Essex First Aid Squad also responded to the scene.

The fire was mostly contained to a second-floor bedroom, according to Fairfield Police.

A preliminary investigation revealed the fire was likely started by a candle that was lit and unattended in a second-floor bedroom, police said.

There were no injuries reported.
