Caldwell Police Officer in Stable Condition After Apparent Heart Attack
Sgt. Fred Arnold was in the intensive care unit as of late Thursday night.
A Caldwell police officer was in stable condition Thursday night after being rushed to the hospital from an apparent heart attack earlier in the day.
Sgt. Fred Arnold was in the intensive care unit in stable condition at Mountainside Hospital late Thursday, Caldwell Mayor Ann Dassing said. Arnold, a veteran member of the department, has served as D.A.R.E. officer for the Caldwell-West Caldwell School District.
Arnold went into cardiac arrest Thursday afternoon while driving in the area of Ravine Avenue. The West Essex First Aid Squad rushed him to the hospital with the help of a police escort down Bloomfield Avenue.
Ravine Avenue was closed in both directions from Hillcrest Road to Central Avenue for what was called a "police investigation," according to a Nixle alert sent out at about 2:40 p.m. Thursday. A second alert was released at about 3:15 p.m., announcing the roadway was reopened.
Caldwell Police Chief James Bongiorno was not immediately available for more information on Thursday.
