A Caldwell police officer who suffered an apparent heart attack was in critical but stable condition Friday at Mountainside Hospital's intensive care unit.

Sgt. Fred Arnold was found "unconscious and unresponsive" inside his marked patrol car after crashing near the intersection of Ravine Avenue and Francis Place shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, according to a Caldwell Police post on its Facebook page.

Responding officers from Caldwell and West Caldwell removed Arnold from the vehicle and performed rescue efforts, police said. The West Essex First Aid Squad and the Mobile Intensive Care responded and assisted with the rescue efforts, police said.

The West Essex First Aid Squad, with the assistance of a police escort, transported Arnold to Mountainside Hospital where he remained in the intensive care unit on Friday.

The investigation remains ongoing into the cause of the one-vehicle crash that caused no other injuries or property damage, police said.

"The Caldwell Police Department would like to especially thank the West Caldwell Police Department and all of the surrounding agencies and first aid squad members who responded to the scene and rendered assistance," the department's Facebook post reads. "We would also like to thank everyone for their positive thoughts and support at this time."
