Movie: Everything Is Illuminated," followed by a discussion lead by Jewish cinema expert Eric Goldman, Ph.D.

“Everything Is Illuminated” (2005), starring Elijah Wood, is
Liev Schreiber’s adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s acclaimed novel. What starts out as an expedition to piece together one family’s story under absurd circumstances turns into a powerful series of revelations that touch on the importance of remembrance, the perilous nature of secrets, and the meaning of love and friendship. The film raises age-old questions we continue to ask, particularly as we prepare for the New Year, in our search for Jewish identity
and self-understanding.

Dr. Goldman is a known lecturer on Yiddish, Israeli, and Jewish film and noted film educator. He is former director of the Jewish Media Service, which was a national clearinghouse on film and television for the North American Jewish community. Dr. Goldman served as a juror at the Jerusalem International Film Festival. In the summer of 2011, he was film curator at the International Yiddish Theatre Festival in Montreal and last winter he curated the Ring Family Israel Film Festival at Yeshiva University. Dr. Goldman has also produced and directed for radio, television, video, and film and has developed and authored more than a dozen DVDs, including Yidlmitn FidlHill 24Doesn’t Answer, and Lies My Father Told Me. He won a Special Jury Award at the 1996 International Jewish Video Competition.
