CALDWELL COMMUNITY TAKING OWNERSHIP OF ART ON THE AVENUE

“Bigger, Better, and Ours,” declared June Cowell,
President of the Caldwell Merchants Association describing this year's Art on
the Avenue which opens Saturday at 10 am on Bloomfield Avenue in central
Caldwell.  “There will be 62 artists,
sculptors, photography, including the “Critters of Caldwell” and art crafts
artisans, Paper Mill Playhouse chorus performing on the historic Green, the
Jazz combo from Montclair State University, even a trolley bus to ride along
the Avenue from the Green to Central Avenue.”

“And Better, for the Essex County Division of Cultural
and Historic Affairs, Public Service Electric and Gas, the Kiwanis, the
Rotarians, the Women's Club of Caldwell, Jack's Foodtown and the Cloverleaf,
even the public library have joined as sponsors.  The Women's Club under Carol Crump's
leadership is hosting the student art contest, the Rotary is serving as booth
sitters, the Caldwell Public Library is hosting an artists reception at the
judging at 4 pm on the Green.  Chris
Bernardo and Company have stepped up to help with the clean up.  Most member restaurants are serving “Food to
Go”, special lite lunch food viewers can carry with them to see the show,  and at very moderate prices, too.”

“This historic town is taking ownership of the event,
they are beginning to feel that this is a place where they want to live—and to
invest themselves.”

The show's judges are Laurie Harden and Virginia May,
both recognized and prize winning working artists.  Special awards are also made for sculpture
and photography.  The Student Art Contest
involving kids from the public, the parochial, and the private schools also
awards recognitions.  All the finalists
and the winners will be displayed on the Green.

Caldwell's Council is providing special free parking
for the artists and all the town lots are open for the event.  The Community Center and the American Legion
Hall will be open for public restrooms and places to charge phones.  The rain date is Sunday, June 1 from 11-5pm.

Art is also interactive.  Since Wednesday artists have been painting at
street corners, the park and at the historic sites in Caldwell en plein
aire.  Their works will be available as
well as art craftsmen such as Richard Aldorasi, who does the ancient art of
ebru, paintings on silks or paper by floating pigments on water, who will be
working on the Green.  There will also be
frozen Italian ices available on the Avenue.
What's not to like?  Bring the
family.
