Republicans O'Donnell, Capozzoli Win Caldwell Council Seats In Close Election

The election was finally decided after the Essex County Board of Elections counted all provisional ballots on Tuesday night.

Republicans won both seats on the Caldwell Council in last week's election by only a handful of votes after a close race ended with provisional ballots being counted Tuesday.

Thomas O’Donnell and Pasquale Capozzoli were certified as the two winners of the election on Nov. 5, according to the Essex County Board of Elections. The election was finally decided after the board of elections counted all provisional ballots because the race was so close.

The official results released by the Essex County Board of Election were:

  • O'Donnell: 1,086
  • Capozzoli: 1,080
  • Kerrigan: 1,068
  • McNish: 1,073
The unofficial results showed Democratic candidates Grace Kerrigan and Maureen McNish losing last week. With as little as 15 votes separating all four candidates last week, Kerrigan and McNish refused to concede

Each candidate only received a few provisional ballots, said the board of elections spokeswoman. O'Donnell receive the most with six ballots, then Capozzoli with five, Kerrigan had three and McNish had two.

With the Republican sweep, the political makeup of the Caldwell Council remains unchanged and in control of the GOP. In addition to O'Donnell and Capozzoli, the council is made up of Republicans Richard Hauser and led by Mayor Ann Dassing.

The Democrats on council are John Kelly, Frank Rodgers and Edward Durkin Jr.
