Week in Review: Fireworks Photos, Ice Cream Social Video, Golfer Gets Two Holes-in-One

Every 4th of July, West Essex residents gather on the lawn of the in Caldwell for some wholesome, all-American fun, including ice cream, potato-sack races, a flea circus and more. This year, a Snickerdoodle Bake-off challenged residents to bake the best snickerdoodle cookie, a popular treat from the president's time. A total of 14 entries were judged, but the winning batch was clear.

Sprout Food and Farms owner David Chalek grows plants with such tantalizing names as long Chinese noodle beans, dragon’s egg hydroponic cucumbers and wickedly hot ghost peppers. Chalek will bring his produce to the  this summer.

For the second week in a row, our top story involves a local man who got not one, but two hole-in-one shots at the in West Caldwell last month. Errol Cook, 73, a retired financial executive and Mountain Ridge member for 35 years, has played golf most of his life, but never hit a hole-in-one until acing both the 14th and 16th holes (both par-threes) within about 15 minutes. The chances of achieveing two hole-in-ones in a single round of golf is purportedly 1 in 67 million.
