Letter: Renter Peeved Over Parking Permit Overhaul

The writer is a tenant in Caldwell who can't get a permit in Hanford Lot after daytime spots were reduced.

I live at 399 Bloomfield Ave. The entrance to my apartment is through the Handford lot.

I went to get my permit and was informed that I could purchase a night permit for that lot but not a daytime one as they had been "sold out." I was confused by this statement of "sold out". They have they are issuing. The officer then informed me that the lot across the street (Gould) was also sold out for daytime permits. My ONLY option was to purchase a permit for behind the .

So the town would like for me to wake up at 6 a.m. every day and move my car from the Handford lot to the Caldwell Diner lot then walk back home to get ready for work then walk back to get my car again. All for the lovely cost of $180 per quarter [$90 for day+$90 for night].

I have been buying permits for two years. On the application is my address and phone number. I did not receive a notice of any kind telling me that they would be limiting the spots for the permits.

So they have no qualms about charging an absurd amount of money for you to park your car, but you can't park your car by your house. Renters of Caldwell are getting screwed! For the amount of money we pay we should be allowed to pick our lot!

This is nothing new... It happened to me back in 2004/2005 when I rented in Caldwell... I lived on Roseland Ave, and had the parking deck right across the street from me... I went a little late, and ended up having to get a day permit for the diner lot, and a night permit for the parking deck. Annoying, but it is what it is.

Move to MOntclair. You will pay alot more. Parking permits in Caldwell have been this way for years. I had one back in 1995 day and night. If you say you are paying for a day and night permit for $180 then I would think you would not have to get your car out at 6am. This was the best thing this town has done in a long time.

I'm sorry but I don't understand why landlords and renters that don't have adequate parking for tenants think the town is obligated to provide them with parking. Complain to your landlord, not the town. One of the biggest issues for the merchants on Bloomfield ave. and the people who shop there, is that there is not enough convenient parking. The town has to try to strike an equitable balance.

Hello, Let me give you a little follow up. After leaving a couple voices mails and sending out emails to the mayor and all the councilmen, I was contacted by the mayor and the chief of police in a very timely fashion. I was granted a day permit for my lot and picked it up this past Friday. They went above and beyond to make sure I had a permit for my lot.I was also told that I should not have a problem when trying to purchase my next permit. I was informed that they overhauled the numbers due to merchant complaints, that there were not enough slots for customers AND that they found permits purchased by merchants that were never used. I do know that there are more people that need the same pass that I needed. There was a young lady there that night with me that also needed a night pass in the same lot. They also put into effect no more calling in your car at night. You must purchase an overnight pass for $5 and park in a municipal lot. I understand that the town is trying to find an equal balance for everyone as far as parking in concerned, and in the process it has ruffles a few feathers. Thank you.

Thanks for posting the follow up Anthula. Great to hear that the police department was able to accommodate your permit needs.
