Fireworks-Making Supplies Found in North Caldwell Home

A domestic disturbance call on Evergreen Drive led police to the discovery.

A domestic disturbance between two men in a North Caldwell home over the weekend led to the discovery of a cache of fireworks and fireworks-making materials, according to authorities.

The Essex County Bomb Squad was called to the 70s-block of Evergreen Drive on Saturday at about 1:30 p.m. after police had been told "bomb-making materials" were in the house by two brothers—33 and 35 years old—involved in a domestic disturbance, North Caldwell Police Detective/Sgt. Bill Texas said.

The bomb squad found fireworks, such as bottle rockets, and "questionable substances" in unmarked bottles in the home, Texas said. While some of the substances were found to be innocuous, others appear to have been used for making fireworks.

"He had the materials to make his own fireworks," Texas said.

No charges have been filed against the two men for possession fireworks and the investigation is still ongoing, Texas said.

Fireworks are illegal to own in New Jersey. The unlawful possession of fireworks is a fourth-degree crime and can carry a petty disorderly persons offense.

North Caldwell Police were originally called to the home for a domestic disturbance between the two brothers. The men were fighting inside the home, Texas said.

The younger brother had visible bruises on his face, police said. The 35-year-old man was charged with assault. The names of the brothers are being withheld because it was a domestic dispute.
