Featured Adoptable Pet: PETEY!

Petey has a very sad story of abandonment, through no fault of his own, and he is searching for someone that will give him the chance he deserves in a forever home and to feel love that lasts.

FEATURED ADOPTABLE PET AT THE WAYNE TOWNSHIP ANIMAL SHELTER:

PETEY

MY STORY:

I’d like to introduce myself to you!  My name is Petey, and through no fault of my own, I’ve had a lot of bad luck when it comes to finding a forever home and someone to love me.  It all started when I was abandoned in 2009, right before Christmas, just because my owners decided they could no longer care for me.  Instead of getting a nice bone wrapped in a bow as a Christmas present, I spent Christmas day scared and confused in a shelter cage.  I’m thankful though that they gave me up to the shelter because my owners didn’t treat me right and kept me in an outdoor dog cage where I spent all of my time bored and alone instead of in a warm home indoors where I could feel loved.  Then, after some time went by at the shelter, I was finally adopted to a great lady, but due to the flooding of Hurricane Irene last Summer, our home was destroyed, and I was once again given up to the shelter because my owner could no longer care for me.  I was really sad to be back at the shelter because I had finally felt love, but it was only for such a short period of time and then it was taken away from me yet again.

But thankfully I’ve been given another chance at the Wayne Township Animal Shelter and this time I hope it’s the last time and that I can finally find my forever home.  Unfortunately, by now I’m used to being abandoned and stuck in a cage, since that’s all I’ve ever really known, but I still hope each time someone comes to meet me that this might be the one person who will finally love me forever.  But so far it hasn’t happened so the only option I’ve got is to wait patiently, as I have for a very long time, and see, smell and hear the same things every day inside the shelter, when all I really want is to be in a home where maybe instead of staring out through metal bars I can stare out the window and see, smell and hear different things like cars, birds and people and be able to play with someone instead of just being lonely and sad in my cage.

ABOUT ME:

I’m a very handsome guy and a mix between a Labrador Retriever and a Shar Pei, which makes me a very unique looking dog!  I’m very smart and able to learn training commands quickly and really like playing all kinds of games like fetch and tug and love going on walks to get my energy out.  And although I’m an energetic guy, once I’ve gotten some play time in I can easily switch into a more mellow cuddly guy too when I’m in a loving home environment.  I get along so great with people and dogs and I’m just a really friendly guy who always has a wagging tail and a big smile to greet you.  As if being so cute, friendly and playful wasn’t enough to win you over, here are some impressive achievements on my resume:

  1. Basic Obedience Class: GRADUATE
  2. Doggie Daycare: APPROVED
  3. Agility:  I’m a very agile dog and would do amazing if enrolled in an agility class!

One of the shelter volunteers, Jen, works with me very closely and she takes me out with her every week to practice training and to give me some much needed love and play time.  Its so great when I’m out of my cage, because I turn into a different dog as I experience freedom and love.  I can finally relax because I know I’m with someone that cares about me, instead of in a cage where I feel bored and anxious.  I’m so sad when I have to come back to the shelter, because as much as the shelter staff and volunteers love me there, after experiencing life outside of my shelter cage for the day, I just really wish that someone would give me a chance and take me to their home forever.  My best friend Jen was recently interviewed about me and had this to say:

“Petey rides so well in the car and is house trained. When I pick him up,    he’s coming straight out of his kennel, so he has some pent up energy, but walks like a dream with an “Easy-Walk” harness.  He loves stuffed toys and will even carry them in his mouth for a little while.  The other thing I am working on with Petey is how he plays with people.  Sadly, before we found him, we think he was always left by himself.

Everything to him is new; so it’s just a matter of patiently teaching him because he loves to learn and loves to please. Petey does not show his affection by smothering you with kisses.  He shows his affection simply by wanting to be around you, and from the excitement that he radiates when he sees you.  You can literally see the affection he feels in his eyes.  It’s the sweetest thing.  Petey is an amazing dog who deserves to know what it feels like to be part of a loving family.”

So, hopefully Jen explained what I’m like since she knows me very well and although she tells me that I’m the greatest dog, I still feel sad and wonder why I’ve been at the shelter for such a long time watching people pass me by and I just don’t understand why since I’m a really good dog.  I have so much love to give and just want to be in a home with someone that wants to play and have a lot of fun like I do!  When people come to visit the shelter I try really hard to show them how friendly I am and let them know how much I want to come home with them, but so far no one has taken me out of my shelter cage and into their home permanently.  I just need someone to give me a chance and see the potential in me to be a really great pet and, more importantly, a best friend.  When I meet you I promise if you just give me a chance you’ll love me, but not as much as I’ll love you for rescuing me from my shelter cage and finally allowing me to feel real love that lasts forever.  That’s all I want from you….
