Meet the Caldwells' 'Cutest Couple'

West Caldwell husband and wife win dinner for two and a dozen roses for Valentine's Day.

The "votes" have been counted and Mel and Lina Sereno of West Caldwell are hands down the Caldwells' 'Cutest Couple.'

The Serenos earned the greatest number of comments (well over 100) out of the 13 entries and will receive a dozen red roses from Caldwell Flowerland and a Valentine's Day date at Sofia's in North Caldwell.

"We're thrilled and honored to have won the Cutest Couple contest through The Patch," husband Mel wrote Patch when he heard they won. "Thanks to every person that voted for us! Our journey has not been easy, but the one thing we have is each other. Happy Valentine's Day from our family to yours."

The couple has been married for 13 years and moved to West Caldwell in 2001.

Husband Mel entered the contest by submitting a photo and a caption to the Caldwells Patch last week. In his entry, he said he and his wife don't get out much because they must care for two medically fragile boys who require constant care.

"Although life is very difficult at times, we would not change a thing and would do it all over again ... well we could do without their disease; Metachromatic Leukodystrophy Disease," he told Patch.

Here are just three comments left in support of the Serenos:

Lina and Mel, not only cute but loving, courageous, selfless, strong, and funny!
—Judy Moffatt Angiolino

Lina and Mel are the most deserving couple for this contest. The have two children with a horrific disease, and they spend every hour and everyday taking care if these children, leaving their needs behind. A dinner out together for even two hours would be wonderful and the bouquet of roses will remind them of the people who have voted for them.

John is the one who signed us up for this contest and to be honest we were really excited about all the votes we were getting. We didn't read any of the other stories till the other day, but when we read Mel and Lina's it brought us to tears. Our vote goes to them.
—Briana and John

Congratulations to the Serenos and Happy Valentine's Day!

Did I read this correct? Briana and John were in the contest and they voted for Mel and Lina? Congrats to the winners of course. But congrats to Briana and John as well. That is a class act.

Thanks Chief, What a great thing to say about Johnnie and Bree. They are gracious "losers" as I read their own comment and vote for Lina and Mel. Class all the way. Hopefully next year they will have the chance to be what we all know they are, by far the CUTEST COUPLE EVER!!!

I would like to take a moment to congratulate Lina and Mel and hope they truly enjoy this night out. I would also like to thank Chief Bramhall for his expressive description of my son Johnnie and his long time girlfriend Briana. They may not have "won" the contest but they are totally winners in my eyes, and the eyes of all who voted for them. For a young couple they have it all, a bit of fun, typical issues and a pre-test at being parents... No...They love and care for their 2 year old dog Rachett... Like Mike said....Class act all the way...

you people should be ashamed... these people win so you come on here and self promote!?! The Chief of West Caldwell Police Department basically spits on the winners!?! Wow I really hope the Chief edits his comments so they don't come across the way it does. I understand Mrs. Seragusa of course loves her child and may look at him in a skewed light, but the Chief really should walk back his comment on the patch. I am sure Lina and Mel are probably quite hurt by his remarks.

Although I do not know the couple that won... I am happy for you and hope you enjoy the night out.

Michael I am not sure what you are reading. I read where he wrote "congrats to the winners" and said something nice about 2 people who where in the contest and voted for Lina and Mel. I do not see how the winners would be "quite hurt" as you say. All the comments were positive except yours.

ok... so If you're at a dance.. and Bob is there, Jill comes over and decided to dance with you, the next day, the chief of police goes on the internet and posts "Did I hear this right? Bob was at the dance and Jill ended up dancing with Kevin? I mean congrats to Kevin but gee Bobs a class act". (Kind of a back handed compliment).

Michael, I think you need to brush up on reading comprehension.
