The Caldwell Merchants Association is gearing up for its Fifth Annual Art on the Avenue event on Saturday, May 31, from 10 to 5 p.m. Artists and fine art crafters are invited to participate.

Last year nearly 60 artists displayed and sold their work along Bloomfield Avenue during the event. This year we have a special en plein aire division where artists will be painting along the avenue and other historic sites in town on Friday and Saturday morning.

“It's such fun to watch a painting come to life before our eyes,” said June Cowell, president of the CMA.

Professional judges select art for the Winner's Circle on the Caldwell Green where final decisions about prize winners will take place in the afternoon. More than $1,100 in prizes will be awarded including $500 for best in show.

Fine and en plein aire artists as well as crafters can find more information or download an application at caldwellmerchants.com or call 973-364-1124.  Exhibit space will only be available through May 12 with reduced pricing until May 1.

A student art contest, run in conjunction with the Caldwell Women's Club is open to all young people from kindergarten through 12th grade.  The theme of this year's contest is   “Shop Downtown.” Finalists will be displayed at Art on the Avenue for final judging.

For contest information please call 973-403-1162.

Features this year include a performance on the Green by the Paper Mill Playhouse Chorus, a jazz group from Montclair State and an opportunity to create a painted silk scarf.  A reception at the Awards Ceremony will offer refreshments. West Essex High School Art Honor Society is supplying face painters and local restaurants are providing “Food To Go” while strolling. Handmade jewelry, sculpture, fibre art and photography will be available for viewing and purchase.
