Grieving is normal. Whether it is due to the death of a loved one, losing a job, divorce, moving, losing a friendship or losses related to aging or illness—these are all experiences that shape us.
But we live in a “Get-Over-It” culture that encourages avoidance and denial of these feelings—especially in children and teens. Many adults struggle with how to identify and encourage healthy grieving in their kids. How do we talk about it? Should we try to distract our kids or listen to them? What if it all becomes too much? How can we make room in our turbo-charged lives to grieve? What are the benefits of healthy grieving?
Lisa Athan, the Founder/Director of Grief Speaks and a grief recovery specialist, will speak at James Caldwell High School tonight as part of The Socially Literate Parent Education Series.
Lisa has 20 years experience communicating educational and inspirational information about grief and loss to adults, teens and children. A member of the Traumatic Loss Coalitions for Youth in three New Jersey counties, Lisa is passionate about teaching people how to acknowledge and resolve grief before it presents through depression, anxiety, addictions or other disorders.
