Emergency Responder Training, Free Movies and More This Week

Looks like an easy, breezy summer week is on tap in the Caldwells.

The West Caldwell Planning Board meets Monday to consider building proposals and weigh them against the township master plan. The gathering takes place Monday at 7 p.m. at the municipal building, 30 Clinton Road. North Caldwell's Planning Board gathers Monday as well. That meeting takes place at 7:30 p.m. at North Caldwell Borough Hall at 141 Gould Ave.

With the rise in the number of intense storms that have plagued the area, we've heard  a lot lately about emergency preparedness. A crew of local volunteers are dedicated to being ready in the face of any disaster—the West Essex Citizens Emergency Response Team. And now is your chance to join this public safety effort: A basic C.E.R.T. Training Class begins Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Essex County Police Academy, 250 Grove Ave. in Cedar Grove. The 5-session course is open to West Essex residents between the age of 18 and 80. Training is usually once per year so now is the time to register. Registration forms are available on the West Essex CERT website.

Bring the family out for Pizza and a Movie Night at the Caldwell Public Library, Wednesday evening. The feature this week is the classic "Johnny Tremain," a timely offering about a silversmiths apprentice who finds himself caught up in the U.S. Revolutionary War. The free event starts at 6 p.m. at the library,  268 Bloomfield Ave. Reservations are required. For more information or to make reservations, stop by the circulation desk or call 973-226-2837.

Thursday is about the kids in North Caldwell: The borough's Municipal Alliance and Recreation Department present a free family-friendly night of movies and late-night swimming at the North Caldwell Community Pool. All residents are invted; pool membership is not required. The night will feature fun, snack bar refreshments and positive prevention messages to remind kids to avoid alcohol and substance abuse. This week's featured film is Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax." The special event happens this Thursday and July 18 and 25 from 7-11 p.m.; the pool closes at 9:30 p.m.
