Caldwell Scouts Achieve Eagle Rank

Thomas Nancoz helped manufacture new cribbing for the West Essex First Aid Squad. Tom Neill painted 100-plus fire hydrants.

Caldwell residents Thomas Nancoz and Tom Neill were awarded their Eagle Scout Ranks at a Court of Honor ceremony held last month at the North Caldwell Firemen’s Center.

To earn the Eagle Scout rank, the highest advancement rank in Scouting, a Boy Scout must fulfill requirements in the area of leadership, community service and outdoor skills.

Nancoz, 18, is a 2013 graduate of James Caldwell High School and is currently attending The University of Scranton majoring in Business Administration.

For his Eagle project, Nancoz manufactured new cribbing for the West Essex First Aid Squad. Cribbing is used to stabilize vehicles during extrication and other rescue tasks.

The previous cribbing was more than 25 years old and in need of replacement. Sufficient surplus cribbing was manufactured to allow for replacement of any cribbing that may be lost or damaged in the next decade or longer.

Neill, 18, graduated James Caldwell High School in June 2014 and in the fall will major in business at High Point University in North Carolina.

For his Eagle project, Neill painted more than 100 fire hydrants in the township of Caldwell. This helps to maintain the condition of the hydrants as well as increase their visibility in case of an emergency.

To advance through all the ranks, a Boy Scout must pass specific tasks which are organized by requirements and must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges. A scout must also participate in at least 18 hours of service project leading up to their Eagle service projects.

For the Eagle Service Project, the scout must plan, develop and give leadership in a project that is helpful to a community organization. Just over 2 percent of all Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle.
