Artists Paint With Spinach, Beets and Carrots

More than 50 young artists had a chance to try a new medium last Friday at the .  

All children were invited to make their own Caldwell Farmers’ Market wall hangings using all natural, vegetable-based paints. The wall hangings were constructed using recycled paper grocery bags, using bamboo sticks and unbleached twine. 

In addition to painting, the artists learned how they could make their own paints using beets, carrots, spinach, red cabbage, lemon rinds, sugar and water.

The project was conceived and led by Project Main Street volunteer and Caldwell mother, Tracy Voca, with assistance from Maria Voca, Kristi Castano and Nature Noggins—a group of local children who care about nature and come together in Voca’s back yard to do environmentally friendly projects.

Isabel Voca, Maximilian Schwarz, and Bridget and Kara Castano spent one afternoon last week preparing the paints for the kids at the farmers’ market to enjoy. 

Voca and Nature Noggins will be back at the market on August 31 making Veggie Bugs. All children are invited to make their own creatures using vegetables found at the farmers’ market. As with all Caldwell Farmers’ Market events, this activity is free an open to everyone in the community.

The Caldwell Farmers’ Market is held each Friday, from noon to 6 p.m., in the municipal parking lot behind , with access from both Smull Avenue and Personette Street.

The market is organized and managed each year by , volunteers from the community who also raise money for downtown beautification and revitalization projects.
