West Essex Observes Moon Festival

Students in West Essex High School's Chinese Classes learned all about the Moon Festival just in time for the Harvest Moon. Using an IPAD, West Essex High School Chinese teacher Cynthia Ni showed students images and videos teaching them about the festival in her classes last week. Students learned about the myth that the earth had 10 suns. A warrior shot down all but one of them to stop the drout, then marries the woman who told him not to shoot down the last one. The woman he marries eventually becomes the moon goddess after she drinks a magical elixir and floats off to the moon. The festival takes place every fall during the harvest moon. West Essex High School sophomore Derek Gallagher of Fairfield told classmates how his family enjoys sweets including moon cakes and then goes out to watch the moon. Ms. Ni also shared moon cakes and other Chinese sweets with her students to observe the festival. West Essex High School Principal Gary Suda visited a class where students told him about the festival.
