West Essex Middle School Students Create Earthquake-Proof 'Buildings'

Students create structures out of spaghetti and marshmallows.

West Essex Middle School Seventh Graders studied earthquakes in Science Class with Teachers Jean Zuhl and Paula Arbadji.
"As a culmination to our earthquake unit, our classes built earthquake-proof buildings out of spaghetti and marshmallows and then tested them on a shake table," said Jean Marie Zuhl and Paula Arbadji.
The table was funded by a special grant from the West Essex Foundation for Education.

The spaghetti was not cooked and students used marshmallows to create different building-like structures. Many students said they were confident that their buildings would survive an earthquake, but most did not.
