West Essex Middle School Spanish Students demonstrated their knowledge of vocabulary associated with a unit on housing by building their own houses in the third marking period.
The houses were displayed in the middle school cafeteria classroom.
Middle School Spanish teacher Raquel Williams said asking students to build a prototype of their houses was a culmination of the unit. The best houses were displayed in the Middle School Cafeteria Classroom for several days in April.
"This was a hands-on activity that aimed to develop creativity besides internalize the vocabulary and grammar structures learned in the unit a meaningful way," Mrs. Williams said. "I could see the creativity and skills of drawing, building, math skills as well as language skills. Students received an extensive rubric and the best projects were displayed in the MS cafeteria classroom."
The results were impressive! Houses were built from wood, boxes and poster board and featured furniture in everything from the bedroom to the kitchen.
"I was very pleased with the results," Ms. Williams said. "After the project, we had our end of the unit test and the students did extremely well. I am sure the hands-on experience helped them apply the vocabulary that they had learned. The students were very excited and happy about their product. They told me that they loved it and they see that is possible to learn Spanish and enjoy what they are learning. It was a really meaningful experience that I believe the students will always remember."
