West Essex High School Inducts New Members of National English Honor Society

A total of 19 students were recently recognized.

The West Essex High School chapter of the National English Honor Society inducted 19 new members into the society.

The new members were inducted at a special ceremony in the High School Library on April 24. Outgoing officers were recognized and new officers were also inducted.

Background information on NEHS:

Mission and Purposes

The mission and purposes of this organizationshall be literary and educational. WE-NEHS shall strive to:

A. confer distinction upon secondary school students for high achievement in English language and literature

B. provide, through its local chapters,c ultural stimulation in secondary school environments

C. encourage interest in the English language arts

D. promote exemplary character and good fellowship among its members

E. serve society by fostering literacy.

Goals

WE-NEHS has the following primary goals:

· to recognize on the national level those who, on the basis of academic grades and performance, merit special note for past and current accomplishments

· to nurture members tofurther develop their abilities in the various fields of English

· to encourage members to use their talents in the service of others

The Sigma Tau Delta Board of Directors believes that such goals are appropriate for students of English at all levels, and that with the development of NEHS (preceded in 1994 by the founding of Sigma KappaDelta), students of various backgrounds and grade levels can share with one another their mutual appreciation of, and excitement with, literature, fine writing, language and media studies.
