King of Tibet Visits West Essex High School

The King of Tibet, Namgyal Wangchuk Lhagyari Trichen, visited West Essex High School on Thursday to show a documentary he made about his country and talk about Tibet's modern struggle for independence.
The king, a 21-year-old student at Gettysburg University, was staying at the home of West Essex alum Joseph Salamone, a Fairfield chiropractor. He is visiting schools across the country to educate people about the plight of Tibet. He hopes that his country and its citizens will some day regain their freedom from China.  Dr. Salamone arranged the king's visit to West Essex, where he met with administrators and students.
Trichen first showed his 27-minute documentary showing him living in exile in India with his mother and sisters where he swept floors and handwashed clothes. He also spoke about his father, who died in prison. Trichen then answered students questions. Students asked about everything from his college major (probably political science) to whether he would be arrested if he retured to Tibet. "I don't know - you should ask the Chinese government," he said.
Students said they were excited to meet the king and surprised that he lived so modestly.
