Special Election, Library Science Club, Shred-It Day and More

  • Voters will go to the polls Wednesday to elect a new Senator to fill the late Frank Lautenberg's seat. Newark Mayor and Democrat Cory Booker will face off against Republican and former mayor of Bogota Steven Lonegan.
  • The North Caldwell Recreation Department will sponsor a five-week junior martial arts program for students in 4-6 grade beginning Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. at the Gould School, at 132 Gould Ave., for a fee of $125. The team of instructors from 5 Rings Martial Arts will teach participants kickboxing, grappling, Kung Fu and core movement, while emphasizing confidence, respect, and discipline through focus and character development.   • The Caldwell Public Library's popular Science Club will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the library. During the library's monthly meetings, children in grades K-2 will read a story about a new science topic and then explore that topic by doing an experiment.   • Temple Sholom of West Essex will host "Shred It" on Wednesday for people to discard personal and financial papers starting at 9 a.m. at the temple, at 760 Pompton Ave. in Cedar Grove. Each box of papers will cost $10 to shred. For more information, call 973-239-1321.
