The Zenas Crane Homestead, a pre-Civil War structure, is festively decorated, featuring a seven foot tree, special holiday exhibits, a Christmas Workshop for children, docent-guided tours and mannequins resplendent in Victorian garb. Unique exhibits at the Crane House include:
- “Timeless Holiday Plates” dating from before the 1890’s to the present time
- “Santas Throughout the Ages”
- Selected Nativity displays
- Children’s iron toys
- Old Caldwell’s War of 1812 NJ Militia flag, a rare artifact from two centuries ago
A special Holiday Ornament Workshop for children will also be held at the Crane Homestead, featuring instruction on simple crafts that result in tree ornaments that children can take home.
From 3:30 to 4:30 pm children are invited for “Story Hour,” featuring readings of beloved holiday classics.
“The Christmas Walk,” organized annually by the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex, features tours of homes in the area decorated for the holiday season from noon to 4:30.

More About Historical Society of West Caldwell
Located in the Zenas Crane homestead, the Historical Society of West Caldwell advocates for local historic preservation. Monthly meetings in conjunction with Friends of the West Caldwell Library feature entertaining speakers. The group awards scholarships to local students majoring in history or social sciences. There's also a weekend quilting group that meets every other week. New members are always welcome.
