Congressman Rodney Frelingyusen was first elected to represent the 11th District, which encompasses mainly Morris and Essex counties, in 1995. Previously, he was a state Assemblyman and is currently a resident of Harding. The Republican incumbent recently announced his bid for re-election and sent out the following letter to his constituents on April 3: It has been one of the high honors of my life to serve the people of this great state as their Representative in the United States Congress. I am humbled to have consistently received the trust and support of the residents of 56 municipalities across five counties. Last Friday, I filed nominating petitions with the New Jersey Secretary of State, officially signaling my intent to seek the …

With Romney nearly certain to get the GOP nomination, campaign season begins to heat up.
With decisive victories in Wisconsin, Maryland and Washington D.C., former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney appears to have the GOP nomination just about sown up. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is trailing in delegates and Romney has taken advantage of his surge forward to begin campaigning earnestly in Pennsylvania. But analysts say that the slight decrease in unemployment and economic uptick will help keep President Barack Obama's approval rating high enough to get him re-elected. The outcome of the election is up for grabs, but what do you think of our 44th president's chances of getting elected to a second term?

Arnold seeks to unseat long-serving sheriff.
John Arnold Jr., the son of a Newark police lieutenant and himself a law enforcement veteran, has filed to run in the June Democratic primary for Essex County Sheriff, a post held for decades by fellow Democrat Armando Fontoura. His campaign announced the filing today and the Essex County Clerk’s Office confirmed it. No other candidate, Democrat or Republican, has yet filed to run in the primary, the clerk’s office also said. Arnold, who was profiled by Patch in December, has served in law enforcement since 1985, when the Science High School alumnus became an officer with the campus police at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark. GOP convention gives the widow of the late assemblyman an easy victory.
Parsippany's Betty DeCroce is the Republican party's choice to represent the 26th District in the state General Assembly. At a special GOP convention to select a successor for the late Assemblyman Alex DeCroce at the Zeris Inn in Mountain Lakes Wednesday night, his widow easily defeated her lone challenger, Montville attorney and GOP committeeman Larry Casha, 120-67. At the event's start, there were three known candidates: DeCroce, Casha and Rockaway Mayor Larry Sceusi. A fourth was announced, Gary Steele, an attorney and former gubernatorial candidate from Montville. Sceusi and Steele dropped out early, leaving Casha and DeCroce. "I think we saw, with the energy in the room, that everyone believed that Betty Lou, with her impeccable …

26th District legislator says transitioning after the loss of DeCroce is 'difficult and unpleasant.'
The Morris County Republican Committee meets Wednesday for a special convention to fill the seat left vacant by the sudden Jan. 9 death of 26th District Assemblyman Alex DeCroce, of Parsippany. One of the GOP leaders awaiting the event being held at the Zeris Inn in Mountain Lakes is the late lawmaker's colleague, district office mate and friend—a man in mourning yet moving forward—Assemblyman Jay Webber. In addition to dealing with the personal loss of DeCroce, Webber also faces a move to new district offices. Because of redistricting, Whippany is no longer part of the 26th District, which means the DeCroce/Webber suite of offices on Route 10 will have to move. He said Parsippany sites are among those being considered. Right now, Webber…
