This Patch photographer tagged along for an impressive, shocking and informative stroll through the park he grew up in, and thought he knew! The walk with tree expert Rich Rombough was sponsored by the Grover Cleveland Park Conservancy.

"Imagine having your own private forest to visit when you feel like getting away from it all. It's waiting for you at Camp Wyanokie, a natural wilderness environment only minutes from civilization, and less than an hour from home in West Milford, NJ." So reads the website for Camp Wyanokie, a wooded area less than 30 miles north of the Caldwells that was gifted to and can be used free of charge by the residents of five West Essex towns—Caldwell, Fairfield, North Caldwell, Roseland and West Caldwell. The 150-acre camp includes a five-acre lake and is adjacent to the more than 4,200-acre Norvin…
The warm weather, long days and students clad in shorts are all signs that the end of school is here. But nothing says graduation season like the lawn signs and painted car windows that are popping up around town. Patch snapped a few examples in Caldwell and West Caldwell and invites you to add your own. James Caldwell High School's Class of 2011 Commencement Ceremony will take place Thursday, June 23, at 6 p.m. West Essex graduated 255 seniors this past Sunday. Congratulations and best wishes to all!
Smart boards, French magazines and bacteria kits are just some of the educational extras the West Essex Foundation for Education (WEFE) has helped purchase through its fundraising efforts for West Essex Schools. One of the many ways WEFE raises money is through an annual cut-a-thon which has become a highly anticipated spring tradition. The popular event took place once again on Tuesday, June 7, at Panico Salon & Spa in West Caldwell. For a $25 donation, West Essex students, as well as their siblings, parents and supporters, came in for a haircut between 3 and 7:30 p.m. Owner Jack Panico, a …

Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. hosted a wreath laying ceremony Wednesday afternoon in Essex County Veterans Memorial Park to commemorate Memorial Day. "Having this park named in honor of our veterans, both alive and deceased, is a fitting tribute to those who served in the military," said DiVincenzo, flanked by county veterans and officials. "This is our way of showing thanks for what they did and bringing attention to veterans and the serious issues they face when they return home. They fought for our freedom and it's something we cannot take for granted," he said. Opened in …
More than 50 teams with some 469 participants raised more than $120,000 in the second annual Relay for Life of Caldwell, NJ. After months of planning by more than 30 committee members, the fundraiser for the American Cancer Society took place at James Caldwell High School, West Caldwell, from Friday evening through Saturday morning. Students, families and survivors gathered for the overnight event as a reminder that "Cancer Never Sleeps." Most of the event, which has teams of walkers continuously walking throughout the night, was moved indoors due to the rainy weather. A luminary service …
Patch contributor Gianpaolo Fabiano has been hanging out at the cat room at the Jersey Animal Coalition in South Orange per usual and noticed that many, if not all, of the cats featured in our last Patch kitty cat photo gallery have been adopted (thanks in no small part to Fabiano's fabulous photos, we might add). "I just wanted to thank you again for your great story. I've spoken with some of the staff members at the shelter and they are also very appreciative." On that note, Fabiano has gathered these photos for round 2. "There are so many friendly cats in there right now," wrote Fabiano in…
In a few weeks, hanging baskets overflowing with dragon-wing begonias and American flags will appear on lampposts along Bloomfield Avenue in downtown Caldwell. The baskets and flags are courtesy of Project Main Street, which purchased and hung them last year to help enhance the look of the borough’s business district. For the second year, the flowers are from a greenhouse a short distance — but a world away — from the bustling avenue, Baird Green Houses in Roseland. Proprietor Alex Baird has just under nine acres of property on Passaic Avenue. Baird specializes in geraniums, which he sells …
Students, teachers and parents were among the approximately 700 people who lined up at Panico in West Caldwell on Tuesday to get a nice haircut while raising funds for James Caldwell High School's Project Graduation.
More than six-and-a-half tons of electronics were collected during West Caldwell’s Electronics Recycling Day in March. The total tonnage was twice as much as was collected last year in a single event, according to Sandy Berardi, the township’s recycling coordinator. “This is largely attributed to a new state law prohibiting televisions, computer monitors and laptops from being disposed of in the trash,” Berardi told Patch. “Residents are happy to comply and have been very pleased with the opportunity to dispose of their unwanted electronics in an environmentally conscious manner.” The event …
Caldwell College was invited to join prominent buildings across North America and the world for the Light It Up Blue program to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day. At the college, the new state-of-the-art Center for Autism and Applied Behavior Analysis, the Newman Plaza, and the entranceway to the Student Center and Newman Center joined the effort by going blue. Since …
Advanced placement art history students at West Essex Regional High School were recently presented with a challenge: create a large scale reproduction of a masterwork. On Friday, March 18, the students lined the school’s hallways to produce 12 murals of works by such masters as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Georgia O’Keefe. The murals were displayed in the school cafeterias so students as well as faculty and staff could vote on their favorite renderings. The best mural was deemed to be Henri Matisse's “Woman With a Hat,” by 11th graders Michael Leonardis, Nicole Del Mauro, Blair Shulman…
It started as a simple idea. Open the Caldwell Community Center pool every Sunday night through March to a group of kids who want to participate in the Special Olympics. What has resulted is much bigger than imagined. Some 21 children are not just learning how to swim at the center each week. Members of the team – now known as the “Cannons” – are learning to work past their disabilities, while more than a dozen volunteers are getting a special education of their own. The new program at the Caldwell Community Center is believed to be the second largest in the state. “We are one of the few …
