Project Main Street's first-ever Caldwell Beautification Day yielded some big numbers. More than 90 volunteers planted 21 trees, expanded, cleaned-up and mulched more than 80 tree beds, painted 55 lamp posts, planted dozens of fall flowers in the Green and refurbished a bus stop. But the most impressive number of the day is "one." The community-wide effort brought everyone together, from residents to merchants to local business owners, to enhance downtown Caldwell from Trinity Academy to Willing Hearts. "The day was so special and I really felt like the spirit of our community was alive …
As Ken and Sharon Reeve walk around the lower level of Caldwell College's Mother Joseph Residence Hall, they see the piles of debris and unfinished construction but also the steel framework that will soon be the foundation for the 5,000-square-foot Center for Autism and Applied Behavior Analysis. The husband-and-wife psychologists implemented New Jersey's first master's degree program in applied behavior analysis at the college in 2004 and began the state's only doctorate program in that area last year. Now the Chatham residents await the opening of the new research, clinical service and …
When Lincoln School students return to class on Sept. 8, a new face will greet them at the door: Principal James Bigsby. "Sometimes people think change is bad. I think it's exciting," Bigsby said last week. "Change is good. It forces us to take a look at where we are and what we can do better." After six years as a vice principal at Grover Cleveland Middle School, Bigsby looks forward to his first role as a principal. He replaces C.R. Williams, who retired last month after 22 years with the district. "My job is to have the academic press, to make sure kids are achieving and reaching their …
After 33 years with the West Caldwell Department of Public Works, friends and co-workers had plenty of jokes, jabs and even more fond memories they shared with Bill Frint at his retirement party Thursday night at Mayfair Farms in West Orange. But Frint, who has been the department's director since 2000, isn't ready to leave completely. Frint, 56, began a private LLC company several years ago that he'll work under as a part-time consultant for the town and will continue serving as water director three days a week. "I am too young and I am not ready to sit home yet," the lifelong West Caldwell …
The blinds are always up, and if Rob Paterson could, he'd remove the hinges from his office door as well. The fire department stops the new Caldwell Community Center's director short of this measure of transparency. In his first three weeks, Paterson's open-door policy with members and his more than 75-person staff has been the first step to improve and revitalize a center that he believes has lost its relationship with the community over the past nine years. "I've been very, very lucky. It's much better than I thought it would be. Of all the places I've taken over, [Caldwell] is very …
